    Lagos Assembly Pledges Collaboration With Nigerian Army On Security

    The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has pledged the support of the House for the Nigerian Army with the goal of sustaining the peace experienced in the State.

    Dr. Obasa gave the assurance on Thursday when he received Brigadier General Olawale Matthew Oyekola, 48th Commander of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, who visited the House of Assembly with his team.

    According to the Speaker, the State’s legislature with 40 lawmakers is committed to ensuring peace and stability in all the local government areas of Lagos and welcomes every support from the right quarters in this regard.

    “I want to assure you of our total support. Our arms are wide open. When you need us, all you have to do is just call on us. We are at the House of Assembly to protect the people’s interests, their rights and ensure they do what they are supposed to do.

    “We love peace in Lagos, which you can call a mini-Nigeria. And with your coming, we hope to sustain the peace we have in the State.

    “Our interest is to prosper Lagos economically, socio-politically and in infrastructure,” the Speaker said while commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his policies that have kept the State growing.

    Obasa used the opportunity to hail men of the military who, he described as gallant, for their dedication and loyalty to Nigeria. He specially commended the military men tackling insecurities in some parts of the country, particularly in the Northeast.

    Speaking earlier, Brigadier General Oyekola said he was in the House to associate with the representatives of the people of Lagos who he and his men are mandated to protect.

    Noting that he was returning to Lagos 20 years after he left the State, he said Lagos is peaceful and that this status needed to be sustained.

    He solicited the support of Lagosians for the Army, which he called the third layer of protection with the Nigeria Police Force as the first layer.

    “Wearing this uniform does not make us different from the people. We are first civilians before becoming men in uniforms,” he said.

    General Oyekola resumed at the Brigade’s Headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos on August 21, 2024 after previously serving as Chief of Staff at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.

    The Lagos State House of Assembly has amended the Appropriation Law of 2024 that has a size of N2,267,976,120,869.

    The reordering is sequel to a letter dated August 9, 2024 and sent to the House by the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    The House at plenary on Thursday gave the approval after the Chairman of the Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Hon. Lukman Olumoh, presented the report and recommendations of the Committee which were adopted as the resolution of the House.

    Though the total budget size remains the same, the recurrent expenditure was reduced from N952,430,566,998 in the original budget to N935,377,028,422 while the capital expenditure was increased from N1,315,545,553,871 to N1,332,599,092,448 following the reordering.

    “That a bill for a law to authorise the issuance and appropriation of N935,377,028,422 from the Consolidated Revenue Fund for Recurrent Expenditure and N1,332,599,092,448 from the Development Fund for Capital Expenditure thereby totalling a revised budget size of N2,267,976,120,869 for the year ending 31st December, 2024 be passed into law,” the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, announced to his colleagues who unanimously voted in favour.

    The Speaker, thereafter, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to forward a clean copy of the bill to the Governor for his assent.

    Prior to the passage of the reordered budget, Hon. Olumoh reminded the House that in the letter sent by the Governor, the latter explained that the rationale for the request to redistribute the budget included the need to boost the appropriation to some Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals.

    The letter requesting the reordering had also emphasised the need to meet the State Government’s commitments to the residents through the budget.

    Unidentified gunmen early hours of Wednesday attacked and destroyed facilities of the Obowo Police Division in Obowo Council Area of Imo state.

    This was according to an eyewitness who spoke to Vanguard in Owerri.

    He also said the same gunmen had allegedly killed a resident said to be a police officer, at NEPA bus stop in the same Obowo LGA, last Tuesday night.

    Also, in another development, an eyewitness, a resident of Isiala Mbano Local Government of Imo state, said: “The secretariat of the Isiala Mbano council Area was attacked and set ablaze including vehicles and some buildings by hoodlums and many were injured. We heard two members of the vigilante group were killed, during a gun battle between the security operatives and hoodlums.”

    Narrating how the incident happened, while he pleaded not to mention his name for security purposes, the eyewitness said: “This young police officer was killed at NEPA bus stop where he is residing. It happened by 8 pm on Tuesday. The gunmen came and spent more than forty-five minutes in that house. They took their time to identify who is a student and a police officer in that compound before killing him after identifying he was a police officer.”

    “He was slaughtered. But we have a military presence in the same Obowo and three Police formations in the area. None of them came to the rescue of this officer. After 1 hour, and 30 minutes the military came and not the police. This sad.

    “This happened in a place where we have area command, Ishinweke Police Division and Obowo Police Division. They still returned this early morning and burnt down the police division,” he said.

    Reacting, the Imo state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, said: “The Command has deployed tactical teams to apprehend those responsible for this crime.”

    The Lagos State House of Assembly has emphasised the need for a proactive approach in addressing domestic and sexual violence in the state.

    At a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the House stressed the importance of establishing guidance and counseling units in schools and religious institutions as a way to reach out to the public and prevent such violence.

    The House also called on the Ministry of Information to continue its enlightenment campaigns.

    In his position, Dr. Obasa pointed out the complexities involved in cases of domestic violence, particularly the impact on children.

    “We thank the agencies in Lagos for their continuous efforts in raising awareness among residents.

    “However, no law can entirely eliminate any crime. We must go beyond sensitisation and help people understand why relationships, which should be loving, sometimes turn sour,” Obasa said.

    He questioned the effectiveness of interventions that involve removing children from their homes, asking, “If we take children away from their parents, who will care for them as their parents would? Even when NGOs intervene and ensure separation, what happens after the separation?”

    The Speaker also expressed concerns about the lifestyle choices of some young people, particularly boys in their teens doing everything they can to own homes in affluent areas like Lekki, and young girls who spend days out of school in a bid to make money.

    He advocated for educational programmes that would go beyond mere enlightenments to actively teach children about domestic violence.

    Moving a motion under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’, Hon. Omolara Olumegbon, representing Lagos Island 1, highlighted the necessity of educating children about domestic violence.

    She urged that the existing laws be given the needed spark while there should be improvement in sensation and enlightenment.

    She further emphasised the urgency of sustaining awareness and educating the youth. She called on the relevant ministries to intensify their efforts.

    Contributing to the debate, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) expressed concern over the high incidence of domestic violence in the society.

    While distinguishing domestic violence from parental discipline, he stressed the importance of prevention and the enforcement of existing laws.

    On his part, Hon. Abiodun Tobun underscored the importance of teaching values and norms in schools and religious institutions.

    Contributing to the debate, Hon. Rotimi Ajomale urged the concerned agencies to increase their efforts in encouraging victims to speak out.

    Hon. Aro Moshood highlighted the alarming statistics of women being the primary victims of domestic violence. He called for stronger laws to address the issue while his colleague, Hon. Funke Osafile, advocated for the strengthening of laws and policies.

    The Nigeria Police Force on Monday declared Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey), a British national, wanted for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government led by President Bola Tinubu. Not only that, the Police Force said it has apprehended ten suspects accused of receiving financial support from foreign sources to destabilize the country.

    It added that that a comprehensive investigation has begun into how foreign mercenaries and other subversive elements conspired to undermine Nigeria’s democratically elected government. The Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, revealed this information at Force Headquarters in Abuja, while speaking with Journalists.

    He stated that Wynne rented a space at Labour House in Abuja for an ‘Iva Valley Bookshop’ and established ‘STARS of Nations Schools’ as a cover for his subversive activities. Adejobi added that documentary evidence and confessions indicated that Wynne issued directives and monitored the progress of the protests that took place in August.

    He further revealed that Wynne provided funding and operational guidance aimed at achieving an unconstitutional regime change in Nigeria. Adejobi said IGP reassured the public that the Force will exhaust all avenues to ensure that individuals or groups threatening national security, peace, and democratic governance are brought to justice. He emphasized that any movement seeking to undermine the government through unconstitutional means will be dealt with decisively.

    Over 1,000 individuals have benefited from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) eye-care services.

    The company flagged off the third edition of the Vision First Programme, as part of comprehensive community-focused healthcare outreach targeted at the Ilaje community and its environs in Bariga, Lagos State.  

     Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye made this known in a press statement yesterday.

    The Vision First programme is a continuation of NNPC Ltd/ SNEPCo Production Sharing Contract (PSC) commitment to advancing health and well-being within its host communities.

    The statement said: “Through this initiative, over 1,000 individuals will receive free eye care services, alongside a range of general healthcare provisions.”

    The services include cardiovascular screening, BMI assessments, laboratory services, consultations, treatment of mild and chronic diseases, and distribution of insecticide-treated nets. 

    Since its inception, the Vision First programme has made a significant impact, with over 1,853 individuals benefiting from free eye care services.

    The Lagos edition, which began in 2022, has screened 2,000 people, provided 1,199 prescription glasses, administered medication to 1,310 beneficiaries, and facilitated successful procedures for 189 individuals.

    The initiative is also aligned with the Mallam Mele Kyari-led Management commitment of making positive impact in NNPC Ltd’s host communities and enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians through sustainable partnerships.

    In his remarks, the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (CUIO – NUIMS), Mr. Bala Wunti stated that the Vision First Plus programme represents a commitment to restoring hope and improving lives within NNPC Ltd commour communities.

    “Through this programme, we aim to ensure that preventable vision challenges do not hold anyone back. By providing eye screenings, corrective lenses, surgeries, and general healthcare, we’re dedicated to bringing clarity and brighter futures to those who need it most,” Wunti, who was represented by Mrs. Bunmi Lawson, added.  

    The outreach emphasized the significance of proactive health management, highlighting that healthy eyes lead to a brighter future. Attendees were encouraged to protect their vision through regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and adequate rest.

    Operatives of the Kaduna State Police Command have foiled an armed robbery attack and neutralized one of the robbers.
    This was contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mansir Hassan and made available to the media Tuesday.

    The statement said that the police patrol team of Makarfi Division encountered a group of armed robbers who had blocked the road using logs of wood and stones.

    The Statement added that upon arrival at the scene, a shootout ensued between the police and the armed robbers

    The superior firepower of the police patrol team forced the robbers to flee into the surrounding bushes.
    During the exchange, one of the robbers was neutralized, and his locally-made pistol and one cartridge were recovered

    In the same vein, the statement further stated that one Abdul Aziz Abdul Mumin reported to the police that his blue-black Toyota had been stolen.

    Following the report, the vehicle was spotted in the Hayin Dan Mani area of Kaduna. Acting swiftly, the police traced the location, maintained surveillance and recovered the vehicle.

    The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Chairman Zacch Adedeji, has established a 12-member Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).

    This initiative, inaugurated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at the Revenue House in Abuja on Tuesday, aims to uphold zero tolerance for unethical practices and corruption within the agency.

    In his address, delivered by Chief of Staff Mr Tayo Koleosho, Adedeji emphasised the importance of integrity, stating, “He who comes to equity must come with clean hands.”

    He urged the new members of the ACTU to embody the core values of the FIRS, which strongly oppose corruption, and to ensure that their actions reflect transparency and integrity in their roles.

    Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman, conveyed Adedeji’s message: “The easy part of being a member of the FIRS anti-corruption unit has just been done. The real work starts now.”

    He highlighted that both the staff of FIRS and the public should see the integrity brought to this role as a reflection of the agency’s commitment to ethical practices.

    Mohammed Lawal Abubakar, Coordinating Director of the Support Services Group, reiterated the FIRS’s commitment to supporting the ACTU and encouraged the inductees to be exemplars of honesty and integrity.

    ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, represented by Mr Olusegun Adigun, Director of System Study and Review, assured that the FIRS ACTU would receive the necessary support to fulfil its mandate.

    He outlined the unit’s responsibilities, including periodic staff sensitisation on corruption, system reviews to identify and address corruption vulnerabilities, and the development and enforcement of a code of ethics.

    Adigun stressed that the ACTU is intended to work in concert with FIRS management to enhance the agency’s reputation, rather than act as a parallel authority.

    He urged the FIRS to provide a supportive environment, including funding and office space, for the unit to thrive.

    Hajia Sa’adatu Yero, Director of the ACTU, commended Adedeji for his commitment to strengthening anti-corruption measures.

    She outlined the unit’s role in preventing corrupt practices and highlighted its success in collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including the ICPC, Nigerian Police Force, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    Yero also noted that the ACTU was rated among the best in the country with a 79.95% score in the 2022 Ethics and Integrity Scorecard survey.

    President Bola Tinubu has appointed new Directors-General for the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

    In a statement on Monday, presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said Tinubu appointed Mohammed Mohammed as the new NIA boss while Adeola Ajayi has been appointed to lead the secret police.

    Ngelale said the fresh appointments followed the resignations of Ahmed Rufai of the NIA and Yusuf Bichi of the DSS.

    Tinubu had retained Bichi and Rufai in June 2023 when he fired all service chiefs and heads of security agencies.

    The new NIA boss Mohammed has had an illustrious career in the foreign service since joining the NIA in 1995.

    He had served in various roles, culminating in his promotion to the rank of Director and his subsequent appointment as the head of the Nigerian mission to Libya.

    The 1990 graduate of Bayero University, Kano, had served in North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, and at the State House, Abuja.

    Before his new appointment as DSS DG Ajayi rose through the ranks to attain the post of Assistant Director-General of the Service.
    He had, at various times, served as State Director in Bauchi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kogi.

    “President Tinubu expects that the new security chiefs will work assiduously to reposition the two intelligence agencies for better results and charges them to bring their experience to bear in tackling the security challenges bedevilling the country through enhanced collaboration with sister agencies and in surgical alignment with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

    “The President thanks the outgoing Directors-General of the two pivotal intelligence agencies for their services to the nation while wishing them success in their future endeavours,” Ngelale said.
